In addition to processing PVC, Crane also custom formulates rigid PVC that meet performance requirements for interior and exterior uses, flame and smoke retardancy and impact abuse applications. Rigid PVC offers an impressive array of physical properties that include good impact and stiffness properties, and heat distortion temperature properties of 160° F. Relative to other thermoplastic choices, its balance of physical properties make rigid PVC a cost effective solution for most plastic profile extrusion applications. Crane Plastics also manufactures custom profile extrusions from other thermoplastic raw materials. The following is a summary of these alternatives and their key physical properties.
- CPVC (Chlorinated PVC)-CPVC has inherently good flame retardancy and low smoke generation properties when placed in contact with a flame source. It also has good chemical resistance properties. CPVC's heat distortion temperature ranges from 190° to 205°F depending on the grade.
- ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadeine Styrene)-ABS offers structural rigidity and abuse resistance in a general purpose material. The heat distortion temperature of general purpose ABS is 190° F. ABS requires a modifier to achieve flame retardant properties comparable to rigid PVC.
- Polypropylene-Available in homo- and co-polymer grades, Polypropylene offers low coefficient of friction and chemical resistance properties. Co-polymer grades offer better low temperature impact properties. Polypropylene is not an inherently flame retardant polymer.
- Styrene-Also known as High Impact Poly Styrene, H.I.P.S. is used for impact applications such as signage or appliance applications. Styrene is colorable and has a heat distortion temperature of 175°F.
- Wood Plastic Composite-Custom formulated by Crane Plastics in both polyethylene and PVC based formulations. Both formulations possess excellent moisture absorption resistance properties, excellent nail and screw holding characteristics and can be fabricated with common woodworking tools. The PVC based formulation can be co-extruded with rigid and flexible PVC to enhance appearance or perform multiple functions.
